Virginia Beach Trip

Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5

Day 1

Good Evening Camp Courageous,

pic9The travel group made it to Virginia. It has been a fun time getting here. The campers and staff were pumped about getting to Virginia. The drive to Midway Airport was smooth, Checking into our flight, going through security, and hopping on board are flight went very smooth. We had a nice flight, with a few bumps in the air, but nothing to bad.

When we arrived in Norfolk, VA our shuttle service was waiting for us at baggage claim and greeted us with Virginia welcome sign. The drive from the airport to Virginia beach was smooth and the campers were so excited about getting to see the Atlantic ocean.pic8

Once we saw the ocean, the campers cheered for joy and they kept on asking me, especially camper Nick Gibson, if we were going to have a balcony room. His question came true! He was very excited.pic

When we entered our room, saw our balcony and of course were amazed by our view, we saw to air force jets pass right past us. It was awesome! They had a number of these jets flying around the skies, and the campers found that pretty cool.

As we got settled in our room, we decided to explore the hotel and walk on the beach. So some of the groups freshened up in the hotel and some of us took to the beach. Campers Brett Williams and Bartek Waclawik, are caught “sand surfing” and having a fun time. pic7Camper Bryan Grady had so much fun walking on the beach, he wanted to raise me from the water to the steps. He didn’t expect it to be that rough! Way to go Bryan!

pic2Before we knew it, it was time for dinner, so we made our way to our first (of many) seafood restaurants. Almost everyone got something with a seafood entree, I’m proud of this group for trying new items.

After dinner, we made our way to the hotel, where we took the opportunity to do some swimming and relaxing in the hot tub.pic 3pic 4

It was a great day of travel and it was a relaxing evening. Tomorrow we start our journey of Virginia. We explore downtown Norfolk first. Have a great Tuesday everyone.

Day 2

Good Evening Camp Courageous,

pic11Norfolk, VA, or should I say Naw-Fok! That is how the locals say Norfolk. Well, that’s how the families who have lived here for generations call this city. We started our tour of Norfolk, by visiting downtown.pic 3

We started our journey on the Cannonball trail. This self-guided tour showed us the history of Norfolk, the civil war, and many of the other wars.pic14pic13 pic12There was a church we stopped at called St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where it had a cannonball stuck in the side of the building. That was pretty cool. pic15The one museum we visited on the trail was the MacArthur Memorial Museum. Where we saw the history of the great wars and how General Douglas MacArthur played a huge roll in how the allies won. pic10It was a very informative museum that had a lot of history about his life. General MacArthur is also buried at the museum, along with his wife. The museum also had a visitor center, here we found a gift shop and a 27 minute video about General MacArthur.pic5
pic7

pic8It was sure a busy morning, since lunch wasn’t until 1:30pm. But the campers really enjoyed the tour, I don’t think one of them asked. Anyways, after lunch, we made our way to another visitor center, we shopped some more and all the campers received Mermaid pins. The Mermaid is the state mascot. So the campers all wanted a pin. We then went across the street to another gift store and then made our way to the Hampton Naval Museum.pic 6

At the Hampton Naval Museum, we learned more about how ships evolved over time and how naval ships are very important to our country. It was a great museum.Picpic 4

After our visit, we made our way back to the hotel to freshen up for dinner. We had another great seafood feast and all the campers are not resting their bellies!pic2

We had a fun day, tomorrow will be another adventure! Have a great Wednesday.

Day 3

Good Evening Camp Courageous,
pic11Guess who showed up today? Our good friend and former counselor Stacey Patterson! It was great hanging out with her today. She came in last night, rented a room at the hotel and hung out with us today. She was going back to North Carolina tonight, but the storm is keeping her here. All the campers loved having Stacey visit. pic 17Well, you probably have already heard that a tornado has touched down in a city an over an hour from Virginia Beach. Virginia Beach is in a tornado watch, but the only thing we have received is rain. The temperature got up to 70 degrees today and had just been raining. We are in a watch until 10:30pm EST. So we have an hour to go.pic4

pic 16To be on the safe side, the Aquarium canceled the Whale Watching tour. Which was a bummer, but we made sure to take advantage of our time at the Aquarium. It was a very nice aquarium with a lot of history about the Marshes in Virginia and tons of sea life. During our visit, we had a chance to watch two 3D movies, one called Humpback Whales and the other movie called Mysteries of the Unseen World. pic1Both movies were great and the campers were happy that we had a chance to see some whales, even if it wasn’t on the ocean. The Unseen World, was about the smallest, the fastest, and the invisible objects we do not think are around us, but make up our world. The campers loved both these movies.pic5pic7

pic9pic8The aquarium had a lot to offer and we really took advantage of this experience. When we were done visiting, we made our way to another sea food restaurant and then came back to the hotel to have a night swim. It was a good night!pic3pic6pic10

I hope everyone had a great Wednesday! Tomorrow we head to Norfolk to explore some more museums and the Chesapeake Bridge. Please stay tuned! If anything happens regarding the weather, I will send a message. Have a good night!pic14pic13pic

Day 4

Good Evening Camp Courageous,

pic 9The travel group had such a memorable day. It was our last full day in Virginia and we had so much fun exploring what Norfolk and Virginia Beach have to offer.

pic6pic5The first thing we did was explore a museum called Nauticus. It had a variety of hands on activities, a small aquarium, science activities, and the USS Wisconsin.pic 17 pic 19pic 16We could have easily spent the entire day exploring this museum, but we had fun exploring what we had time for. The travel groups were all over the place enjoying all the activities. pic 18Camper Katie Stephan had always wanted to go in a Hurricane simulator, and she had her dream come true. As soon as she saw this simulator, which brought up winds of over 75 mph, she was all for it! She had such a great time.

pic 4Before we knew it, it was time for lunch and shopping. So we made our way downstairs of the Nauticus. We were a little rushed for time, so right after we finished, we made our way to Norfolk Navy base, where we had a tour of the base. pic 15It was a great tour. We saw two destroyers, tons of helicopters, more war ships, and plenty of barracks. pic 14The highlight from Camper Bryan Grady, was seeing the plane that they used in the movie Top Gun. He was so excited! When we stopped at the gift shop at the end of the tour, he found a hat that said Top Gun, so he made sure to buy one.

pic 8After the tour, we made our way to the highlight of the week. Touring the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. This bridge is 23 miles long and crosses between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Directly in the middle. pic 13I downloaded a Ipod audio player, talking about the history of the bridge. We stopped a couple of times. pic2The first time was when we entered the bridge, we stopped at the gift shop and took some pictures on the pier. pic3pic 12We went under the Atlantic ocean twice, in two underwater tunnels, and went to the top of the highest point on the bridge and took many pictures. The second stop was an overlook at the North end of the bridge, where we took a group picture. We then hopped back on the bridge and made our way back to Virginia Beach.pic 7

At dinner tonight, Camper Katie Stephan wanted me to take a picture of her, because she wanted to show to everyone that she had Crab Legs every night. She is a machine when it comes to Crab Legs! pic 10 What a great way to end our week. Tomorrow we head to the Virginia Zoo and we start our journey back to camp. We fly out at 6pm and arrive in Chicago at 10:50pm. It will be a long day, but it should be a good day.pic 11

Have a great Friday everyone!

Day 5

Good Night/Morning Everyone,

However you look at it. The travel group made it back to Chicago. We are at the SpringHill Suites in Bolingbrook, IL. We will be heading out around 9:30am tomorrow morning. One camper will be picked up in Davenport and the others at Camp.

The day went pretty well. We spent the entire day at the zoo and it was a very nice zoo. Lots of baby animals! More than any other zoo that I have been to. The highlight was the tiger cubs. Two of them! They were so cute! We also saw a baby giraffe. It was a great last day!

Before we knew it, it was time for us to head to the airport. Norfolk is small and easy going. We flew to Baltimore and that was a little busier. The flights were quick and smooth. Now it is time to get some sleep! Have a great weekend!
