The 31st Annual Tait and Dottie Cummins Pineapple Gala for Camp Courageous was held on Saturday, August 15, 2009. It was a wonderful evening at the Crowne Plaza in downtown Cedar Rapids, IA. During the event there were video presenations made.
A table of Iowa Hawkeye items was part of the gala’s huge silent auction. This video was played before the table closed and included clips from a few famous Hawkeyes… profession football player Robert Gallery and Iowa Football Coach Kirk Ferentz. Each had autographed items that were part of the auction. Thank you to these two individuals for their items and to those that bid on them.
The emcees for the 2009 Pineapple Gala were Scott Schulte and Ralph Palmer. Scott is part of the morning show on Z102.9 and Ralph is owner of the ArJay Center. Both did a great job throughout the night. Thanks to each of them for volunteering their time and talents to Camp Courageous.
Members of the Camp Courageous Honorary Board that were present at the gala were introduced to the crowd through the video seen above. The Honorary Board is the highest honor that camp can give to an individual and have played a special part in the history of Camp Courageous.
A very touching part of the evening was when the story of Don and Nancy Zeman was told. Through Don’s radio program, Homefront, they obtained much needed appliances and other supplies for one of camp’s building projects. Don passed away late last year but the imprint they have put on the camp will last for many years to come. It was an honor to have Nancy at this year’s gala.
The last video of the night was about Camp Courageous and the over 5,000 individuals with disabilities that are served each year. Thank you to everyone who attended the gala and helped to support the campers served.
See you at next year’s gala which will be held on August 21, 2010.
