Hello Camp Courageous!!
Yesterday, we had our last trip of the year! We traveled to Fort Atkinson, WI to the Fireside Theatre to see the Miracle on 34th Street performance. We started off our day meeting our 8 travelers, Dan Coyne, Maria Guzman, Nancy Miller, Emily Redlinger, Shelly Wade, Linda Hartnell, Jim Long and Larry Lucier at Camp Courageous for check-in. Once everyone was checked in, we made our way to the gym where we enjoyed some delicious Casey’s pizza for brunch! Once we had our fill of pizza we loaded the bus and began our journey to Wisconsin.
The travelers were excited about out trip to Wisconsin to see the Christmas classic, Miracle on 34th Street. Traveler Linda Hartzell was excited to be traveling on her first day trip with us! To get us in the Christmas spirit we listened to Christmas music on our drive to Wisconsin. We arrived at the theater around 2pm where we meet up with volunteer Audra Kramer. We unloaded the bus then explored the theater while we waited for our meal to be ready. The Fireside Theatre is a very nice place! They had multiple gift shops for us to browse through, a beautiful fireplace, a bakery counter and a fun backdrop for picture taking! The travelers shopped, kept warm by the fireplace and took some pictures before making our way to the dining area for our meal.
We had such a delicious meal!! We started off with cream of shiitake mushroom soup and freshly baked bread. Our main course was chicken piccata, roasted veggies and garlic parmesan orzo. For dessert we had red velvet cake with homemade gingerbread ice cream! The travelers sure enjoyed their meal! Once we finished eating it was time to head into the theater.
There was a stage in the center of the room with seating on all sides. The actors moved all around the theater and up the aisles during the whole show, this really made us feel close to the action! The travelers loved the show! Sorry, we weren’t allowed to take any pictures during the show. But it was a great performance! Traveler Dan Coyne and Jim Long were laughing along with show and having a great time! Traveler Nancy Miller kept giving us a thumb’s up and a big smile to show that she was enjoying herself!
The story took place during the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas in New York City in 1963. This musical is a inspirational and heart warming story. This story is about a man who claims to be Santa who gets a job playing Santa in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Kris ends up meeting a mother and daughter who don’t believe in fairy tales and teaches them to have faith and believe in the spirit of Christmas. It was a heart warming story and if sure got us in the Christmas spirit! They ended the performance with inviting everyone to join them in singing Joy to the World. It was a great way to end our night!
After the show we made our way to Walcott, IA where all of the travelers were picked up. Thanks to all of our travelers and volunteers (Audra Kramer, Dustin Baker, Hanna Steinberg, ReAnna Davis-Spracklin, Treva Guyer, Diane Sneed and Rosa Owen) for a great last trip of the year!!
