Hello Courageous Travels!
Today was a great day to watch the Chicago Cubs play the LA Dodgers!
This morning we started out the day with most of of our travelers and volunteers meeting us at Camp Courageous. Some of the travelers, the die-hard Cubs fans, were so excited to watch the Cubs that they were at camp very early! The travelers that met us at camp were Austin, Hayley, Mickey, David, Andrew, Sarah, Seth, Justin, Marvin, Zach, and Chad. The volunteers, Mary, Ciara, and Antwan, all arrived on time and were willing to help with the check in process. Thanks to the help of Melissa and Sharon Roller, we were able to have a smooth and quick check in process.
Everyone got on the bus and there was an excited atmosphere while Charlotte drove the bus to Dubuque. In Dubuque, we picked up Rolo and checked in three more travelers; Charles, Jenny, and Michael. With everyone on the bus, Rolo started driving us towards Chicago while Kody passed out muffins and pop tarts for breakfast. We stopped again in Belvedere, Illinois to get gas and let everyone use the bathroom. We also met another traveler at this rest stop, Jimmy.
While we were driving to Wrigley Field, Zach kept singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and Seth had flyers that he gave to us showing the proper way to sing the song. Once we got into the city, Antwan was helping Rolo navigate the Chicago traffic. The travelers were so excited once we arrived at Wrigley Field!
As we walked in, every traveler received a free Cubs hat! We found our seats and then ate some stadium food before the game started. One of the food service workers, named Sunshine was so kind and delivered the food right to our seats! The stadium was full of excitement the entire time and so were our travelers!
We saw a few other Iowans at the game and Austin and Michael met a new friend named Rachel. She was interacting with a few of our travelers and cheering on the Cubs with them and they were all having a good time. The travelers all went down to the Cubs store and bought a few souvenirs to take home.
The crowd was so loud when Kyle Schwarber hit a homerun in the 4th inning! Sarah, Hayley, and Jenny all stood and cheered, Justin and Zach were singing Go Cubs Go, and Marvin and Charles were clapping!
During the 7th inning stretch, Mickey, David, Michael and Seth were leading our group in “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and everyone was in such a good mood because the Cubs were leading 3-0!
It was the top of the final inning and Cubs were winning 4-0. Dodgers were up to bat and Michael was trying to get the crowd to stand up and start chanting “LET’S GO CUBS!” The Cubs got the last three outs so quick you couldn’t contain the travelers excitement as they sang “Go Cubs Go” with all of Chicago!
After getting a group photo and stopping to use the restroom, we got back on the bus and started making our way through Chicago traffic back towards Iowa. We stopped in Winnebago, Illinois to get Culver’s and said goodbye to one of our travelers, Jimmy.
After the quick stop we continued on our way to Dubuque and said farewell to travelers Michael, Jenny, and Charles. We also said goodbye to Rolo. Our next traveler pickup was in Marion and we gave our best to traveler Sarah. Our next stop was in Coralville where we said goodbye to the rest of our travelers; Justin, Andrew, David, Marvin, Zach, Seth, Hayley, Mickey, Austin, and Chad. After all the travelers were dropped off, we headed back to Camp Courageous and said thank you and goodbye to our volunteers; Mary, Antwan (Bubba), and Ciara.
It was a great day and a great game! Thank you to all of our travelers for such a great trip and thank you to all the volunteers, we couldn’t have done it without you.
