The annual Back-To-School Festival will be held at Camp Courageous in just one week from today. The camp teams up with Variety to host this event as kids return to school for another year. This year the festival is being held on Wednesday, September 10th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Special education classes from around the eastern Iowa area are invited to attend this free event and enjoy a wide range of activities scattered across the camp lawn and buildings. Rock & Prevention, games, music, magician Rickie Rowray, prizes, hayrides, wobble buggies, swimming, miniature golf, a helicopter, face painting, health bounce, barsumo, and more. What is “barsumo”? Might be easier to show you:
This picture of was taken of the barsumo activity at last year’s festival on Sept. 12, 2007. Two individuals attempt to maneuver their opponent to the ground while keeping both hands on the padded bar and inbounds. As you can see, the weather was excellent!
The big attraction for this year’s Back-To-School Festival will probably be the camp’s new Tom & Nan Riley Train. As I mentioned in a previous post, I was fortunate to be one of the first passengers on the train. It was slow going on that first ride as Gerry Rohr, camp’s train engineer, tested the current engine for how many passengers could be pulled. There is no doubt that the kids attending this year’s festival will enjoy riding the half-mile of track that goes through the camp’s woods. I’d imagine that the depot will have quite the line of riders next Wednesday.
A free lunch will be provided for all during the Back-To-School Festival. With students, teachers, volunteers, staff, and campers approximately 1,000 are expected to be on the camp grounds.
