There is no age limit for entering the Camp Courageous Sprint Triathlon. Youth and adults that are prepared to participate in a triathlon are welcome to signup. Although many will be competing for place and time during this event, casual athletes are welcome. Because this is a sprint triathlon, there will be many first-time athletes.

Distances for the 2017 Camp Courageous Sprint Triathlon will be:
SWIM – 500 yards – held in the 65 acre lake at the Prairie Park Fishery
BIKE – 15.5 miles – held along Otis Rd SE and nearby streets in Cedar Rapids
RUN – 3.4 miles – dual-loop around the 65 acre lake

SWIM MAP – approx. 500 yards:
The 2017 swim route will be an out and back in the water of the Prairie Park Fishery. This lake is fresh water. It is NOT water from the Cedar River. The river does not flow into this lake. (Click map to view in own window.)

BIKE MAP – approx. 15 miles:
The 2017 bike route will be a double-loop on the fast, flat Otis Road SE. in Cedar Rapids. Bikers will leave the transition area and go North out of the park, turn right onto Otis Rd, and then turn when they get to Steward Rd SE. They will then be on loop 1 which takes Otis Rd out to Bertram Rd and then turns around. They will come back to Steward Rd SE and then be on loop 2. Once they finish loop 2 they will stay on Otis Rd and return to the park.

You can enter the Camp Courageous Sprint Triathlon by one of these entry types:

  • Age Group – Individuals will race against other athletes of a similar age. U.S.A. Triathlon rules state that an age is determined by how old a participant is on December 31st of the race year.
  • Clydesdale-Athena – Individuals compete based on their weight. Men weighing 220 pounds plus or women weighing 165 pounds and over have the option to race in this division. Athletes in these weight ranges may still race in the Age Group.
  • Team – two or three athletes compete relay-style. One athlete will swim, one will bike, and another will run. Teams will be broken up into male, female, and co-ed categories.

Athletes can enter as an individual or as a member of a team, but not both. A team can consist of two (one athlete does two parts and the other does one) or three members. You can enter online using the online entry system.

When is Packet Pickup?

  • Friday, August 4, 2017 at Scheels, Coralville from 6-8 PM.
  • Saturday, August 5, 2017 at Transamerica, Edgewood Road from 8-11 AM.
  • Sunday, August 6, 2017 at Parking Lot 44, 800 2nd St SE., Cedar Rapids from 6-7 AM.

It is HIGHLY ADVISED that participants pickup their packet prior to race day. You must have your packet/timing chip prior to taking gear into the transition area. Due to the limited parking inside of the Prairie Park Fishery, extra time will be needed to unload gear and take a shuttle to/from the remote parking lot. Packet pickup will be at the remote parking at Lot 44 the morning of the race. Please allow enough time on the morning of the race to allow for setup of your gear.

IF YOU DO NOT PICK-UP YOUR PACKET PRIOR TO RACE DAY, DO NOT GO DIRECTLY TO THE PARK. YOU WILL NEED YOUR PACKET PRIOR TO GOING TO THE PARK. GO TO LOT 44 TO GET YOUR PACKET FIRST!

RACE DAY SCHEDULE: Please note all times and allow for transit time between parking and park.

IMPORTANT LOADING/UNLOADING AND PARKING INSTRUCTIONS:

Participants: Parking is very limited at the Prairie Park Fishery. As a result we have a well-defined parking procedure in place for race day and it is as follows. The first approximately 80 vehicles to arrive at the park on race day (August 6th) will have a parking spot in the park. They will be clearly directed to that spot, park, and then unload their bike and gear to take to transition as these spots will not be more than a quarter mile away from transition. After those spots are full, the next participants should continue to come to the Prairie Park Fishery where you will be directed to a temporary unloading stall. They will turn off their vehicle, unload bike and gear, taking those items to transition. They will then return to their vehicle and drive to the remote parking site at Lot 44 at the corner of 8th Avenue and 2nd Street SE where we will have continuous shuttle service available pre and post-race. For post-race we reverse the process. Participants will get on the shuttle going to Lot 44. Bringing their vehicle back to Prairie Park Fishery, they will enter the same stalls that had been used pre-race to unload, park, turn off their vehicle and then retrieve bike and gear from the transition area. Once done with loading, exit the park in your vehicle. Since the race is the most conveniently located triathlon ever for Cedar Rapids residents, anyone who wishes to can simply ride their bike with gear in their backpack to the park and avoid the use of a vehicle altogether. Also if you don’t want to be dependent on a shuttle you are welcome to go directly to Lot 44, park and then ride your bike with gear the 2 ½ miles to the Prairie Park Fishery.

Spectators: We will have a minimum of five handicapped parking spots at the Prairie Park Fishery. There will be more handicapped spots available in Lot 44 and we will have a wheelchair accessable shuttle running. Non-disabled spectators are strongly encouraged to simply park in Lot 44 and take the shuttle to the park. Again we will have multiple shuttles running continuously pre and post-race and at least one shuttle running during the race for spectators who may need to get back to Lot 44.

Thank you for your cooperation as we continue to strive to provide a safe and pleasant triathlon experience.

Thank you to Transamerica and all of the sponsors that help make this event possible!
