Camp Courageous Sprint Triathlon

Camp Courageous will be holding its first annual Triathlon on Sunday, August 1, 2010.

ENTRY DEADLINE IS SATURDAY, JULY 31, 2010 AT 7 PM.

WET SUITS ARE NOT EXPECTED TO BE ALLOWED FOR THIS RACE. WATER TEMPS ARE EXPECTED TO BE OVER 78-DEGREES.

Swimmer-100 Swimming
The event will kick-off with a swim at Central Park in Jones County (get Google Maps link here).
Approximate distance will be 500 yards. Start time is 8:00 AM
Biker-100 Biking
Ride from Central Park to Camp Courageous through scenic Jones County.
Approximate distance will be 16 miles. See detailed map below or go to web route map site.
Runner-100 Running
Run on an out-and-back course with the finish line at Camp Courageous.
Approximate distance will be 3.1 miles.

Camp Courageous will be hosting its First Annual Camp Courageous Sprint Triathlon, presented by AEGON, on Sunday, August 1, 2010, 8:00 am. All net proceeds will go to Camp Courageous.

PACKET PICKUP – 3PM to 7 PM on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Camp Courageous. Pickup your packet, enjoy a great pre-event dinner from 5-7 PM, and then drop-off you bike at Central Park lake.

If you pickup your packet on SUNDAY MORNING… packet pickup starts at 5:00 AM and ends at 6:00 AM. It takes 20 minutes to drive from Camp Courageous to Central Park. You will need to arrive VERY EARLY if you plan to pickup on Sunday morning.

The 500-yard swim will take place at Central Park Lake, near Amber in Jones County. The 16-mile bike leg will be a point-to-point ride between Central Park and Camp Courageous. The 5K run will cover both open roads near Camp Courageous.

This event will be a part of the “Heart of America” triathlon series. There will be a Pre-Event dinner at Camp Courageous on Saturday, July 31, 2010, 5:00-7:00 pm.

Where is Central Park (swim location)?
Central Park is located in Jones County near Amber, Iowa. Get a link to Google Maps to Central Park here.

Where is Camp Courageous?
Camp Courageous is located 5 miles southeast of Monticello, IA. Physical address for Google Maps is 12007 190th Street, Monticello, IA 52310. It is about a 20 minute drive from Camp Courageous to Central Park.

What part of the lake at Central Park will be used for the swim?
The swim will start at the beach area on the southeast side of the lake at Central Park. Swimmers will swim out, round a marker, swim across the lake towards another marker, and exit on the boat ramp located near the northwest side of the lake. Distance will be 500 meters.  View the route below.

Can I leave my swim gear at Central Park? Will I be able to have my biking gear ready at Central Park?
On the morning of the event you can place your bike gear with your bike inside the transition area. Numbered bags will be available for all entries to bag their swim gear after they exit the lake. Biking gear can be placed in these bags prior to starting the swim so that athletes will be able to make their transition. These bags will be transported to the camp for the athletes where they can be claimed after the race.

What is the bike route from Central Park to Camp Courageous?
The 16 miles bike ride will be point-to-point from Central Park to Camp Courageous. Get a link to an interactive route map here or view the map below. Bike racks will be available starting the night before (July 31st) at Central Park. The racks will be monitored through the night by event staff. Another set of bike racks will be available at Camp Courageous at the transition point to the running portion.

What is the running route at Camp Courageous?
The running portion of the Camp Courageous Triathlon will be an out-and-back route on the blacktopped surface of 190th Street (road leading to Camp Courageous). This road route will include some gentle hills. Bikers will come in on 190th (on the north side of the road) and enter into the camp’s lower gate where the transition area will be located. Departing runners will take off through the camp’s main (upper) gate and back out onto 190th (using the south side of the road). During the race the road will be closed to all auto traffic. There will be a water station at the 1 mile mark on the run course. Since it is an out-and-back course this is also the 2 mile mark so there will be a second opportunity to get water on the run course.

When is packet-pickup?
Athletes can pickup their entry packets during the pre-event dinner on July 31, 2010 at Camp Courageous. The dinner is from 5 PM to 7 PM and will be held inside the camp’s lodge. Entry numbers, race details, and other information will be in these packets. Athletes are encouraged to drop-off their bikes at Central Park at this time.

There is a packet pickup on Sunday, August 1 from 5 AM to 6 AM. However, it is strongly recommended that you pickup your packets on Saturday and drop-off you bikes on Saturday to prevent confusion the morning of the event.

Who can come to the pre-event dinner?
Athletes, family members, camp supporters… everyone! Dinner is free to all athletes entered in the Triathlon and for everyone else the cost is $5.00 per person. The pre-event dinner will be held on July 31, 2010 from 5:00-7:00 PM in the Camp Courageous lodge. Athletes can pickup their packets during the dinner and drop-off their bikes at Central Park.

WHAT’S FOR DINNER? Butterflied pork chops (grilled by Jones County Pork Producers), Whole Wheat Rolls from Sara Lee, Apple Sauce, Cottage Cheese, Hot Fudge Cake or Strawberries with Ice Cream, Water, Skim Milk or Lemonade.

Can different people do different legs of the race?
Yes. Team entries will be allowed so that one person can swim, another bike, and another can do the run. Select the Team Entry division when you register and provide information on each athlete.

Can one person be part of a team and also be their own entry, too?
No. An athlete can be either part of a team or participate as an individual.

What is the Clydesdale-Athena division?
Men over 200 lbs. and women over 150 lbs. can enter this division.

What is the age limit for this event?
There are no age restrictions. Kids and adults that are prepared to participate in a triathlon are welcome.

Where should I park for the start of this race?
Everyone is encouraged to park at the designated areas at Camp Courageous. Parking at Central Park will be limited and is discouraged.

How can athletes and spectators get between Central Park and Camp Courageous on the day of the event?
Bus transportation will be provided the day of the race between Central Park and Camp Courageous. Everyone is encouraged to park at Camp Courageous and take one of the multiple buses going between the park and camp. Bikes will NOT be allowed on the buses.

When can I put my bike at Central Park?
Bike racks will be available starting the night before the event (July 31st). Access to the transition areas will be restricted and monitored the night before the race and on race day to provide adequate security of all athlete’s equipment. Your race number will be required to obtain access to the transition areas at all times. Bikes will NOT be allowed on the buses.

Can I camp at Central Park before or after the event?
