The 33rd annual Manchester Garage Sale for Camp Courageous is now open! Just as Camp Courageous has grown from 211 campers during the summer of 1974 to over 5,000 campers year-round today, so has the growth of the Manchester Garage Sale.

The Manchester Garage Sale, Camp Courageous’ largest fund raiser, is run by over 60 volunteers. From 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, for six months out of the year, these volunteers give of their time to run the sale located at 913 East Main, in Manchester. The sale opened Monday, April 28th and will remain open until about the first week in October. For the six months following the sale, volunteers work on the facilities, constantly making improvements.

The Manchester Garage Sale has been a win-win situation. People who have donated their personal items to the sale have had the opportunity to clean house, knowing their things will go for good use. The buyer has the opportunity to get needed items at a very reasonable price, and the camp has obtained items it needs, along with much needed financial support the camp needs, since the camp is run on donations.

The Garage Sale is led by a very dedicated committee. For these ladies the sale goes year-round, as they are constantly gathering things, washing and mending items, and doing whatever they can for the betterment of Camp Courageous. The committee includes, Marla Schiess, Honorary Board Member Jackie Snyder, and Vera Gienapp (pictured above).

Do you have items that you would like to donate to the Manchester Garage Sale? The garage sale's success is based on the generosity of people donating items to be sold. Many items can be donated, however there are some items that have not sold well in the past:

Electronic items are not accepted.
No televisions or computer equipment.
Items with a motor, such as treadmills or vacuum cleaners, are not accepted.
Items need to be in clear bags. Items in black or dark bags are not accepted.

Proceeds from the Manchester Garage Sale will benefit Camp Courageous of Iowa, a year-round recreational facility for individuals of all ages with disabilities. The camp operates on donations, without government support, formal sponsorship, or paid fundraisers. Nearly 5,000 individuals with disabilities are served each year.
